For an effective inquiry to take place we need a context, a focus and a framework for questions.  There needs to be a clear rationale behind spending time during a school day exploring a particular concept. It needs to be relevant to the group who are ‘inquiring’.  Students need to feel that there is a specific purpose for the inquiry and that purpose has been explicitly outlined to them.  It is critical to promote the development of ‘student questions’ so that they are part of the curriculum design process.

 

This method encourages students through supports to build research skills that can be used throughout their educational and life experiences. Coby has been practising Inquiry in her classroom for several years and is passionate about other educators also using it.

- Coby usually structures the Inquiry Professional Development as a full day with staff, either during a curriculum day, weekend, or holiday session.
- Coby also offers such PD in after school session, usually a series of sessions over several weeks.
- Coby also conducts Inquiry Based Approach Modelling session in class. This needs to be conducted over several sessions in order to maximise results.
